Taking a safari in Uganda

Bordering the larger Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda doesn’t get as much attention as wildlife destination in African safari holidays. Uganda offers some amazing experiences in its own right in African safari holidays, with the lush jungle of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the savannahs of Kidepo Valley National Park, and rare tree climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Mountain Gorillas are a critically endangered species, according to the World Wildlife Federation. They are only found in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Uganda, you can trek the gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The trekking permits are more affordable than in Rwanda, and while the trek is more physically demanding, the habitat is pristine.

Kidepo Valley National Park
CNN did their Best Safari Parks list for 2017, and Kidepo Valley National Park was voted the third best park in Africa. The legendary Maasai Mara in Kenya topped the list. Kidepo Valley National Park is tucked away in Uganda’s northeastern corner, and elephant, buffalo, lions, leopards, bushbuck and other animals can all be found here. A big part of the park’s appeal is its remote location. Kidepo is off the beaten path , and gets less visitors than Uganda’s better known parks like Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park. You can see plenty of wildlife at Kidepo.

Tree Climbing Lions
Did you know there are only two places where lions are known to climb trees? Lake Manyara in Tanzania is one location, and the Ishasha area in Queen Elizabeth National Park is the other. Visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park can witness the rare sight of a male lion or lioness relaxing in the tree on a sunny afternoon. Nobody knows why the lions here like to climb trees. Some people think they do so to get away from flies, while others believe it’s to beat the heat.

Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees can be trekked in Kibale Forest before visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park. While tracking chimpanzees in Kibale, safarists can encounter warthogs, forest elephants, bush pigs, and possibly see a leopard.
